Cherry Grove Beach Session: A Stormy Start & a Stunning Finish

Some photo to sessions are just meant to happen — even if Mother Nature throws a little drama into the mix.
This beautiful family beach shoot had been in the works for nearly a year. We chose Cherry Grove in the North Myrtle Beach area, one of my favorite photography locations along the South Carolina coast. With its soft rolling dunes, open sky, and peaceful shoreline, Cherry Grove offers the perfect backdrop for timeless beach portraits.
Leading up to the session, everything was falling into place. Both ladies had their hair and makeup professionally done, the weather looked promising, and we were on our way, full of excitement. But if you’ve ever done beach photography in North Myrtle Beach, you know the weather can flip in an instant — and that’s exactly what happened.
As soon as we arrived at our spot, the skies opened up. Rain came pouring down, and lightning lit up the horizon. It was beautiful in its own wild way, but definitely not safe for a photo session. We had no choice but to reschedule.
Luckily, we caught a break — the very next day was stunning. Her hair still looked amazing (major win), and the weather gave us everything we could’ve hoped for. Soft light. Blue skies. Golden hour glow. The kind of dreamy conditions that make all the planning and flexibility worth it.
The final images from this North Myrtle Beach beach session are full of warmth, connection, and that undeniable coastal magic.
